4. Editor's Note: Super Bowl is Here!
Hello readers!

Welcome back to our weekly ezine. Super Bowl Sunday is almost upon us, and I've been asked to make predictions on the game by a few readers (what's with you guys and predictions? Seems you're always asking me for more predictions). Anyway, as usual, I won't disappoint! I think that we will have a low scoring game this year, since both Giants, and the Ravens have great defenses. I think the Giants will come out ahead (then again, I am originally from NY), I don't think I can give a final score, but I do not think that the Giants will win by more than 7 points. Will I eat crow? Guess we'll find out Sunday.

In case you're more interested in web development than football, you might want to keep on reading the rest of this issue for the usual great tips, network updates, reader feedback, and of course, our tale of Stone.

As always, feel free to contact me with feedback at: jason@bigresources.com

5. A1JavaScripts.com: New DHTML Script
http://www.a1javascripts.com
Ian McDonald has added another new DHTML script to A1JavaScripts this week, which I consider a "must have" for graphic heavy sites. The script in question is an image preloader. It will display a status bar on the web browser window, and will progress as the images on your page are loaded. This will alert your visitors that your graphic content is not yet fully loaded, and help to ensure that they will stick around until it is.

Check out the image preloader script directly at:
http://www.a1javascripts.com/dhtml/page_effects/imagepreloaderbar.html

6. HTMLforums.com: New Backend, New Features
http://www.htmlforums.com
Our popular web forums have undergone an upgrade this week, from the Ultimate Bulletin Board script, to the vBulletin script. So what's the difference? Plenty.

a. The vBulletin script uses a database, to dynamically update user post count
The UBB will not update a user's post count until a thread is updated with a new post

b. The vBulletin will show exactly how many members are currently at the boards, in real time
The UBB does not display user information

c. The vBulletin allows us to create posting titles, depending on post count
(see the legend here: http://www.htmlforums.com/legend.html )
The UBB only has Junior Member, and Member options.

d. The VBulletin will display the last poster in each category from the main page, or for each thread within each category.
The UBB will only indicate new posts, unless you enter the thread.

There's plenty of other new features with the upgrade to our new back end. Visit our community for yourself at: http://www.htmlforums.com

7. FresherImage.com: New PhotoShop Tip
http://www.fresherimage.com
Doni Ronquillo has finished another PhotoShop tip, in his "Making of" series, where he shows how he created the design for FresherIimage.com. This week's tip shows how he made those gears at the top of the page. You'll be amazed at how simple those complicated looking gears really are to make, I know I was.

Check it out at:

9. 3 Mistakes to Avoid While Choosing a Web Host
by Candice Pardue
http://www.webmastercourse.com

Choosing a web host is the first vital step you'll take toward having your own website. Your web host will provide space on the Internet for your site so that the whole world can view it. But, choosing a web host is not as easy as it may seem.

There are a few mistakes to avoid while choosing your host. I'd like to share these with you below, and explain why it's important to avoid these mistakes at all costs - especially if you wish to start an online business.

3 Mistakes to Avoid:

1. Free Web Space - Remember seeing all those ads that mention "free web space"? Please avoid participating in these services. In most cases, the reason it's free is because the company will place advertisements for other websites all over your web page. This defeats the entire purpose of having "your own" web business.

Why should you have to give your potential customers away? Shouldn't you be able to keep the visitors that you have paid to receive through your own ad campaigns?
With "free web space" sites, you'll give away more business than it would cost you to get your own domain and hosting service. It's not worth it.

2. Limited hosting - Avoid hosting packages that will not allow you to add order forms, statistics, or multiple email accounts to your website. These are necessary tools for any webmaster who desires to open an online business.

It's best to choose a hosting service that offers many options such as:

- Multiple POP Email Accounts
- Dedicated Hosting
- Secure Servers - Web Usage Statistics
- Web Space Allocation (you can get how much web space you'll need)
- URL Redirection
- Autoresponders

These are just a few "necessary" services to look for when choosing a web host for your new website.

3. Low Cost Hosting - Watch out for very low cost hosting packages (i.e. $2.50 per month). They usually require something in return, which can take away profits from your online business.
I must admit that it does sound appealing to sign up for free or very low cost hosting, but count the costs before signing up...

- Everytime an advertisement banner is placed on your website, it's designed to get your visitor to click out of your website and go some place else. Most free or low cost web hosting services place these banners at the very top of your web page
- giving the visitor an opportunity to click out of your site before getting to the first words of your presentation.
- One complaint that comes to mind about a free hosting service was that the company's server became overcrowded and the customer could not get their website to come up 50% of the time. When this happens, your business is closed - and you have no control over this situation.

One final point about hosting before closing. If you get your own domain name, and your own hosting, your visitors will have more confidence in your site, and will be more willing to buy your products or services. Search for a web host that offers fabulous service, affordable rates, and everything you'll need for your online business. You'll be glad you did!

10. Comment of the Week: (Re:) NS6 - What's the Deal?
This week I've gotten a comment about last week's comment (do I sense an ezine thread forming?) Thanks to Andrew C. Cooper for sending in the comment.

"I tried to use NS6 in my ministry, but it was slower than molasses in wintertime. What gives. One of the missionaries I work with put it on his brand new 700mhz computer and it still ran slow."

If you guys haven't gotten enough of the NS6 chatter, a forum thread has recently opened up on the topic at: http://www.htmlforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=2129

Molasses in wintertime? Sounds like one slow browser.

-Jason

Last Week's Comment:

"Hi Jason,
Ok, so this doesn't really have anything to do with yesterday's newsletter, but I thought that I'd rant to you anyway since you don't mind getting email! All I have to say is, NS6, what's the deal? It looks like Star Trek, but it surfs like it was made in the stone age! Did these guys actually try surfing the web with it themselves before they released it? It was hard enough getting my IE pages to look good in Netscape, but now my Netscape pages don't even look right in the new Netscape!! It's nerve racking! If you have any business with the Netscape folk, give them an earful for me!"

What can I say about Mike's comment? Only one thing, "Nuff said".

Got feedback, questions, or angry rants? Send it my way, I might be goofy enough to publish you. jason@bigresources.com

11. A Stone, Alone: A Colorful Turn
by Jason M. DesRoches
**This week we take a break from the "A Stone Alone" storyline in order to explain the plot**

I have a feeling that the lengthy storyline "A Stone Alone" has some of our readers confused, so I thought that I would take today's issue to bring everyone up to speed on what's going on with it.

The storyline is rich in metaphors, and big on innuendos. Some of you may have gotten that the "forest" in the storyline is in fact, the Internet, which means that an "Oracle" would be a website, and a "gate" the main page of a website. Additionally, a "fruit" is a resource; this could be a resource of any kind, a link, graphic, javascript, etc, however a "path" is strictly a link.

With all this said, you may already have a better grasp of our past storyline, however I'm still going to summarize the events somewhat.

The Wizard of the Gemini Oracle, is the webmaster of a website, who made a promise to Stone. When the Wizard met Stone, he told him that in trade for a "path" on at Stone's "gate", he would return a "path" inside his own oracle (which equates to a sub page within his website). Stone obviously questioned this arrangement, but being new at promotion, and believing what the wizard told him, Stone accepted. The deal had seemingly worked as planned when Stone checked on his "oracle", however when Stone had awoken after a long sleep, the traffic stopped to his "oracle". When Stone returned to see the cause of this problem, he realized that his link was no longer at the top of the list, and in fact had been moved down.

This brings us to where the story left off last week, when Stone angrily muddles through the forest, and comes in contact with a bright colorful toucan. If you're curious as to where the toucan originates, you might want to check the top right corner of fresherimage.com. If you're curious where the Evil wizard in the center of the forest stems from, in the frozen oracle...well... we're not saying :)

Be here next week when we pick the storyline back up, and things get cooking with Stone.

Send feedback to: jason@bigresources.com
