Web Development tips, tools, and developments
============================================================
We've closed the chapter on our old newsletter format this month, and have begun volume II. If you are a regular reader, you'll have noticed the difference right away. The newsletter is now divided into 3 distinct sections, which are 1. PARTNERS AND SPONSORS, 2. NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS, and 3. WEEKLY FEATURE. Our PARTNERS AND SPONSORS section will contain web development related sites which we've formed partnerships with. These positions are given only to sites and services which we feel will be useful. We won't be pushing a month of free AOL, or try to get you to sign up to a service that will provide no value, or flood your inbox. After all, if it's not useful, why bother reading? Our NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS section will contain weekly events in the Big Resources Network, including major site updates, server status, new network sites, and all other network events that we feel to be newsworthy. Finally, our WEEKLY FEATURE will contain a new article, tutorial, review, or snipet of code that was chosen for it's usefulness, or uniqueness. This is the core content of our newsletter, and something that we hope you will really enjoy. This being said, I'd like to welcome you to our new format, and I hope that you enjoy the changes. If you have any comments, questions, or contributions to our newsletter feel free to contact me. Jason M. DesRoches
4. Network Server Move Depending on your geographical
location, you may have had problems connecting to our server during the
past few weeks. We've found that the only way to resolve this issue is
to switch our dedicated hosting provider, to one with a more solid backbone.
We will be switching our server this weekend, and will hopefully have completed
our move by this Sunday night. We have chosen rackspace for their high
commitment to quality, and for their reliable redundant backbone support.
By the time we've settled into our new home, all problems including slow
connectivity, and the inability to reach our pages at certain times of
the day will be resolved. If you are interested in finding our more about
our new dedicated server host for your own needs, please see the link below.
5. PerlAccess, New Webmaster,
New Tutorials
PerlAccess is the network's
tutorial site on the web scripting language perl. We'd like to welcome
a new webmaster to PerlAccess.com this month, Brett Roberts. Brett has
taken control of this site only days ago, and has already added several
new tutorials to our site. Among the additions you'll find operators, including
arithmetic, assignment, accumulating, and adding strings. However, if you're
looking to learn Perl, or just brush up a bit, we suggest you start with
the "Hello World" script, to create your very first output.

Introduction
Sleek and Trim
Fast Development
Inserting images into your
code is also very simple in 1st Page 2000. Clicking on the Add Image button
brings up a dialog box which allows you to select the image you want to
add, preview it, select alignment, ALT text, VSpace, and HSpace. The program
can even automatically calculate the width and height tags.
1st Page 2000 also includes
over a dozen wizards that speed up common development tasks. There's a
wizard for creating JavaScript rollovers, a wizard to create tables and
more.
Learning 1st Page 2000 is
surprisingly easy thanks to the "?" Information center button that explains
a feature of the program. The Instant Help feature is also nice. When you
need more information about a specific HTML tag, simply move the cursor
within the tag and press F1. An instant reference window will pop-up with
all available information for that tag. Evrsoft also included a web developer
complete reference. In it you'll find a reference guide to HTML 4.0, Server
Side Includes, relative paths, a FAQ and more.
In the expert mode of the program, the various tags that you can use in coding your page are grouped into thirteen categories. In other modes, the groupings are different. For example, in the Advanced/Expert mode, tabs are used to group tags. If you've been using Homesite or HotDog, you'll feel right at home in this mode. For those starting out, the easy mode hides the more advanced functions of the program, and categorizes all the different tag groups in an easy-to-understand manner. Just like Homesite 4, on the left side of the interface, there's a panel with tabs for browsing your hard drive, storing code snippets (myCode), a Help tab and more. The interface can be customized by editing the toolbar buttons, and changing the location of the toolbars, and enabling/disabling various panels. A split-screen mode in the
program allows you to code your webpage, and view the results real-time
with the integrated Internet Explorer. There's also a Quick Design mode
that lets you design pages in a WYSIWYG Environment. The Quick Design mode,
like the one in Homesite 4, uses the Internet Explorer DHTML engine to
let you add elements to your page. The mode is pretty good for laying out
tables, but not for much else.
1st Page 2000 includes a collection of over 450 JavaScripts and VBScripts in categories like calculators, email forms, scrolling text, cookies and audio. There are also several wizards that create scripts to kill frames, create a "bookmark this page" link for Internet Explorer users, open a new window, and more. There are also several spiffy DHTML scripts that perform effects like fading, and draggable layers. Several CGI Scripts from Matt Wright's Script Archive, including a guestbook, chat script and counter are also included with full installation instructions. HTML Compression, Built-in
Spell Checker and other goodies
When you decide to move to
style sheets, the convert to style sheets option will come in handy. 1st
Page 2000 will actually create a style sheet for the current page automatically
for you! You can then either use the style sheet as-is, or edit it further.
