3. Updated Newsletter Format

We've closed the chapter on our old newsletter format this month, and have begun volume II. If you are a regular reader, you'll have noticed the difference right away. The newsletter is now divided into 3 distinct sections, which are 1. PARTNERS AND SPONSORS, 2. NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS, and 3. WEEKLY FEATURE. Our PARTNERS AND SPONSORS section will contain web development related sites which we've formed partnerships with. These positions are given only to sites and services which we feel will be useful. We won't be pushing a month of free AOL, or try to get you to sign up to a service that will provide no value, or flood your inbox. After all, if it's not useful, why bother reading?

Our NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS section will contain weekly events in the Big Resources Network, including major site updates, server status, new network sites, and all other network events that we feel to be newsworthy.

Finally, our WEEKLY FEATURE will contain a new article, tutorial, review, or snipet of code that was chosen for it's usefulness, or uniqueness. This is the core content of our newsletter, and something that we hope you will really enjoy.

This being said, I'd like to welcome you to our new format, and I hope that you enjoy the changes. If you have any comments, questions, or contributions to our newsletter feel free to contact me.

Jason M. DesRoches

Newly Appointed Editor In Chief, Big Resources Ezine.

4. Network Server Move

Depending on your geographical location, you may have had problems connecting to our server during the past few weeks. We've found that the only way to resolve this issue is to switch our dedicated hosting provider, to one with a more solid backbone. We will be switching our server this weekend, and will hopefully have completed our move by this Sunday night. We have chosen rackspace for their high commitment to quality, and for their reliable redundant backbone support. By the time we've settled into our new home, all problems including slow connectivity, and the inability to reach our pages at certain times of the day will be resolved. If you are interested in finding our more about our new dedicated server host for your own needs, please see the link below.

5. PerlAccess, New Webmaster, New Tutorials
http://www.perlaccess.com

PerlAccess is the network's tutorial site on the web scripting language perl. We'd like to welcome a new webmaster to PerlAccess.com this month, Brett Roberts. Brett has taken control of this site only days ago, and has already added several new tutorials to our site. Among the additions you'll find operators, including arithmetic, assignment, accumulating, and adding strings. However, if you're looking to learn Perl, or just brush up a bit, we suggest you start with the "Hello World" script, to create your very first output.

6. 1st Page 2000 HTML Editor Review
by Isaac Von Nieda

Introduction
1st Page 2000 is a very solid source-code based HTML Editor that gives quite a few editors a run for their money with its $0 price tag.
Although the business model of Evrsoft, the company behind 1st Page 2000, is questionable, the quality of their product is not.

Sleek and Trim
The first thing that I noticed about 1st Page 2000 is how small it is. A full-installation of the program takes up less than 10MB of hard drive space. Compare that to 23MB for HotDog, and that's not including the 26MB of optional SuperToolz that you can install. Homesite 4 isn't much better, occupying 22MB. The ZIP file that contains the setup program for 1st Page 2000 is a mere 5MB, meaning that it won't take a decade to download, even if you're still surfing at 28.8kbps.

Fast Development
Several features in 1st Page 2000 are specifically designed to speed up development time. One of them is syntax highlighting for HTML, PERL, CSS, ASP, Cold Fusion, SSI, and JavaScript. You can also use 1st Page 2000 to access a wide variety of Web related document file formats such as: Perl, CSS, HTML, CF, ASP, SSI, JavaScript and CGI files.
A special/extended character chart lets you quickly insert extended ASCII characters to your code, like the (c) symbol. The websafe color picker feature lets you quickly select colors for your site, which are automatically converted to a Hex value. The myCode feature, accessible via a tab in the left-hand panel of the program, lets you store and re-use frequent HTML code snippets.

Inserting images into your code is also very simple in 1st Page 2000. Clicking on the Add Image button brings up a dialog box which allows you to select the image you want to add, preview it, select alignment, ALT text, VSpace, and HSpace. The program can even automatically calculate the width and height tags.
A Preview tab lets you quickly preview a webpage from within 1st Page 2000 using Internet Explorer. This saves you valuable time, as you do not need to launch an external browser in order to preview the page, and then switch between the browser and HTML Editor while making changes.

1st Page 2000 also includes over a dozen wizards that speed up common development tasks. There's a wizard for creating JavaScript rollovers, a wizard to create tables and more.
Help System

Learning 1st Page 2000 is surprisingly easy thanks to the "?" Information center button that explains a feature of the program. The Instant Help feature is also nice. When you need more information about a specific HTML tag, simply move the cursor within the tag and press F1. An instant reference window will pop-up with all available information for that tag. Evrsoft also included a web developer complete reference. In it you'll find a reference guide to HTML 4.0, Server Side Includes, relative paths, a FAQ and more.
Interface

In the expert mode of the program, the various tags that you can use in coding your page are grouped into thirteen categories. In other modes, the groupings are different. For example, in the Advanced/Expert mode, tabs are used to group tags. If you've been using Homesite or HotDog, you'll feel right at home in this mode. For those starting out, the easy mode hides the more advanced functions of the program, and categorizes all the different tag groups in an easy-to-understand manner.

Just like Homesite 4, on the left side of the interface, there's a panel with tabs for browsing your hard drive, storing code snippets (myCode), a Help tab and more. The interface can be customized by editing the toolbar buttons, and changing the location of the toolbars, and enabling/disabling various panels.

A split-screen mode in the program allows you to code your webpage, and view the results real-time with the integrated Internet Explorer. There's also a Quick Design mode that lets you design pages in a WYSIWYG Environment. The Quick Design mode, like the one in Homesite 4, uses the Internet Explorer DHTML engine to let you add elements to your page. The mode is pretty good for laying out tables, but not for much else.
Tons of included Scripts

1st Page 2000 includes a collection of over 450 JavaScripts and VBScripts in categories like calculators, email forms, scrolling text, cookies and audio. There are also several wizards that create scripts to kill frames, create a "bookmark this page" link for Internet Explorer users, open a new window, and more. There are also several spiffy DHTML scripts that perform effects like fading, and draggable layers. Several CGI Scripts from Matt Wright's Script Archive, including a guestbook, chat script and counter are also included with full installation instructions.

HTML Compression, Built-in Spell Checker and other goodies
One extremely useful feature is the HTML compression feature that removes unnecessary spaces, shortens tags (i.e. < strong > becomes < b >). I used this feature to reduce the size of the front page of a test site by 7KB, decreasing the loading time by about two seconds for those on 56K connections. The only bug that I found in this feature is the removal of quotation marks from META Tags. Other than that, 1st Page 2000 didn't change important parts of my code, like the JavaScripts. In addition to HTML Compression option, you can also apply source code formatting to make it very easy to read and work with your HTML Code.
The program also features a built-in spell checker and thesaurus. After all, none of us are human dictionaries, and a website full of spelling and grammar mistakes looks very unprofessional. There's even a LiveSpell feature which adds the familiar squiggly red lines under mispelled words. Right-clicking on the misspelled word provides a list of possible correct spellings, Microsoft Word style.

When you decide to move to style sheets, the convert to style sheets option will come in handy. 1st Page 2000 will actually create a style sheet for the current page automatically for you! You can then either use the style sheet as-is, or edit it further.
Options also exist for removing all HTML from a page, and converting a text file to HTML. Both features worked perfectly. The only thing that I have to complain about here is that the text to HTML feature did not automatically create links.

Built-in FTP Program
1st Page 2000 comes bundled with 1st Transfer FTP software. The software has full drag and drop support for easy uploading and downloading, as well as a quick way to change file attributes. A quick connect feature allows you to manage an unlimited number of FTP accounts, and connect to them in one-click.

Missing Features
I noticed four major missing features in the version of 1st Page 2000 that I tested for this review. The first one is the lack of a Global Search & Replace option, that would scan through an entire set of files on your hard drive searching for specific strings and replacing them with other ones. The second missing feature is the lack of support for PHP. For those that don't know, PHP is the Linux equivalent of ASP (which 1st Page 2000 supports). 1st Page 2000 also lacks a tasks list that you can use to keep track of what needs to be done, an feature that estimates the download time of a page at various connection speeds. Hopefully these much-needed features will be added in future releases.

Conclusion
Since the program is relatively new, a few annoying bugs exist throughout the program. One particularly annoying one that I found is that Word-wrap will turn itself off when I switch between open files. However, Evrsoft seems to be listening to its userbase by releasing updated versions of the program every few weeks which contain bug fixes and requested features. If you can live with a few annoyances and bugs, 1st Page 2000 is the source code HTML editor to get.
