8. Set Sail for Clips Ahoy!
Preface:
There are many clip art sites on the web today, and many of them claim to carry original clipart. However very few sites produce their own original clipart, and update on a regular basis. ClipsAhoy.com <http://www.clipsahoy.com> is one of these fine exceptions. This article will cover in depth not only the complete stages of a ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com> original image, but will provide you with a close look at the people behind the website. ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com> had it's humble beginnings in British Columbia, Canada, with a "canvas and paint" artist, Adrea Satre, and her boyfriend, a computer technician named Corey Wilsa. A childhood friend of Corey's, Rob Bartlett of AAAClipart.com <http://www.aaaclipart.com>, had introduced both Corey and Adrea into the world of computer clipart. When Rob had shown the two his successfull Internet business, it sparked an interest within both Corey and Adrea. Adrea comes from a long line of well known artists in Canada, and had always known that she would like to go even further with her artwork then her family members had. After discussing it at length, Corey and Adrea decided that they could put together a website of their own, and stock it with their own original works. In mid 1999, Adrea and Corey began the long path of creating a clip art archive from scratch. They worked for a solid six months creating 500 images, sorted into 180 categories. With the birth of a new life on the Internet together, Corey decided that it was also time to move on with his life with Adrea, so on New Years 2000, Corey proposed to Adrea in Hinton Canada. Just 5 days later they registered the domain name ClipsAhoy.com <http://www.clipsahoy.com>. Rob Bartlett of AAAClipart.com <http://www.aaaclipart.com>, decided that there would be no better engagement gift then a head start with the launch of ClipsAhoy.com <http://www.clipsahoy.com>, so he graciously offered to provide free hosting for them off of his own server while the site gained momentum. The next month consisted of refining the site, and adding new content. Shortly thereafter, Adrea gave birth to her first baby, ClipCat, the mascot of ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com>. ClipCat is a cartoon sailor cat, complete with a telescope for "finding clipart". ClipCat helped to give new meaning to the website name "ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com>". The next big step in the progress of ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com> was the acceptance of requests from visitors, where they had a chance to ask Adrea and Corey to create specific illustrations for free. ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com> then established long standing link exchanges with some already established clip art sites such as Free-Clip-Images.com <http://www.free-clip-images.com>, now known as FresherImage.com <target=_blank> (hey, that's us!), and of course AAAClipart.com <http://www.aaaclipart.com>. ClipsAhoy <http://www.clipsahoy.com> soon became profitable enough for Corey and Adrea to move to their own server. Corey and Adrea made their profit through advertising which they sold on their site, and was their traffic ever growing. However with their traffic spurts came some unanticipated problems. Their hosting company had contacted them because they had gone over their allocated bandwidth. So Corey and Adrea went through their entire clipart archive which now reached over 2100 images, and changed all files to a compressed graphics format known as GIF. Today Corey and Adrea continue to work on their homegrown website, constantly adding new original clipart, finding new link partners, and granting requests to surfers that just can't seem to find what they need elsewhere. 9. Feedback About: Guest Submissions Hello folks! This week instead of covering one particular email in the feedback section, I'm going to cover a general issue which I receive much feedback about; guest article submissions. I get a lot of mail from readers asking if it is ok to submit an article that they are thinking about writing, wrote in gym class, or have researched. The answer guys is yes. There's no need to ask permission before submitting an article. The criteria for submission acceptance is pretty simple: the article must cover a topic well enough for our readers to get some understanding from it, it must be well written, possibly insightful in some way, and hopefully it will cover something related to web development. If you've got something written, or if you want to whip something up, send it in for submission by emailing me at: jason@bigresources.com. And remember, there's no need to ask first :). ============================================================
10. A Stone, Alone: Part
IV - The Deal
**This week we continue our saga with Part V of our webmaster Stone's storyline "A Stone, Alone"** "But Wizard!" Exclaims Stone. "You are asking me to build paths from my gate to your oracle, and you are only offering to build paths from within your oracle to mine? This is madness". "You mussst trussst me Ssstone." Reassures the wizard. "I have helped the largessst oraclesss in the foressst grow large and mighty. Do thisss thing that I asssk, and I will help you too." Stone stops and thinks. He has spent many months in the forest now, he has found hundreds of fruitful paths, created a new formula by which to query the great oracles, and developed a new oracle himself; one which has helped thousands. But he thinks about what the wizard has told him. It is true that he has not yet built many paths to his own oracle. Many people have been helped now, but how many more will find him with out new paths? Finally, Stone speaks, "Wizard, guardian of the Twin Gemini Oracle, I shall do this thing which you have asked. I shall build you a path from the gate of my oracle, and I anticipate your help in kind." A slight smirk comes over the face of the old wizard as he begins to speak, "Then be on your way young Ssstone. Build me thessse paths, and when you return, you will be well rewarded." *End Part V*
