KICKSTART
The Introduction Column!
Pigs are flying! Hell has
frozen over! The Big Resources Ezine has met its weekly deadline for the
first time ever in volume 3 (I must not be doing enough extra work)!
This week, I must URGENTLY
plead for your help. We have a new survey online (12 questions long, radio
button choices only) that I need you all to take. The results from this
survey will help us to tailor our advertising perspectives to your demographics.
This is incredibly important to the network so that we can
provide you with tasteful,
targeted advertising as opposed to bombarding you with bulk, ineffective,
aggravating advertising.
You can take our survey online
at:
http://bigresources.com/survey/
Again, it's a simple 12 question
radio-button, fully
anonymous survey, that should
take only several
seconds to complete. Thank
you so very much for
taking the time to complete
it.

WHAT
DO YOU THINK?
The Reader Input Column!
Last week, I wanted to get
your opinions on the still somewhat obscure domains of .tv and .ws. Although
these domains are sponsored by the countries of Tuvalu and Western Samoa
respectively, they are being marketed as "TeleVision" and "Website". I
asked if you thought these campaigns have been successful in convincing
the web population that these truly are (Television and Website) domains,
or if they will always been seen as just another country domain.
Long time contributor Corbbmacc
O'Connor
of http://www.justforwebmasters.com
writes:
"Hello Jason,
I think that neither of these domain campaigns have been successful because,
as you mentioned, people are marketing them as WebSite and TeleVision rather
than Western Samoa and Tuvalu. I never knew that until today! I think that
the .com domain will stay the most popular because that is one of the first
TLDs (Top Level Domains) created. Whenever I'm looking for a domain, I
always stick with a .com, .net, or .org.
By the way, I love your ezine! Can't wait to get it every...every....whenever
it comes! ;)"
Corbb makes a valid point
that the .coms are the original TLDs, and will in all likelihood, never
be surpassed. I too still only purchase .com domains, however some large
companies are at least taking these new domains seriously enough to purchase.
One such instance is the television network ABC, who has recently purchased
http://www.abc.tv.
While this domain only redirects to their main website at http://abc.go.com/
it still shows that notice has been taken in these new domains, and that
we might just be seeing them around in the future.
This week's question comes
from a topic at HTMLforums.com, which was started by our own Ian McDonald.
Ian provides the following background information:
"Those who are using microsoft
outlook and intend to update to Outlook 2002 which is bundled with Office
XP due for release later this year are in for a shock. It has been designed
in the hope of helping to prevent the spreading of viruses and by default
will reject more than 30 common file types. These include .exe files, batch
files, Windows help files, and Java and Visual Basic scripting files. Also
blocked are photo CD images, screensavers and HTML application files and
many more. Not only will it block email with these file types, but also
refuse to open or download attachments."
Based on this background
information which was provided by Ian, do you think that this sort of file
type blocking will be helpful, or a hassle? Would you upgrade to a software
that blocked the ability to send these file types by default?
I want all of you out there
to tell me, What do you think?

THINK", write to: editor@bigresources.com.

TIDBITS
The Little Goodies Column
After last week's edition,
I received this unprompted (but appreciated) tip for our new TIDBITS column
from Asim Butt of http://www.muslimwedding.org.
Asin writes:
"I thought your readers
might be interested in this tip:
Links to your web site
improve your position on many search engines*. Although joining a banner
exchange doesn't help here, it does help to run your own banner exchange,
especially if it includes a referral reward system for linking to your
site. We use BannerPlus (www.gadnet.com/bplus)
which has this feature. There are several other exchange software packages
available very cheaply."
*To elaborate on how search
engines use links to position your site, go to http://www.altavista.com.
In their search field type in link:http://www.mydomain.com (replace http://www.mydomain.com
with your actual url). Altavista's results will show all of the sites on
the web that are linked (if they are indexed with Altavista) to you. Altavista
will then use this figure in it's positioning equation to figure out where
to place your site in it's standard search results. So build up your reciprocal
links, in addition to building reciprocal traffic, they help your search
engine position too!

The Heavy Reading Column!
Create a Vertical Divider
Line
by Candice Pardue
http://www.justforwebmasters.com
Unlike creating a horizontal
vertical line by inserting an <HR> tag, a simple html code is not available
to insert a vertical divider line into your web page.
However, there are two simple
ways to insert a vertical
divider line...
1. Create a "Graphic"
Vertical Divider Line
You may insert a graphic
image (.gif) as your divider line and align it next to your paragraph.
Although you'll be forced to use this method if you need a
divider line that has an
odd shape or color, this is not the most efficient method.
By using a graphic as a divider
line, you'll risk the graphic line not being lined up correctly when others
view your web pages. Also, it could slow loading time for your web
page. This method should only be used if necessary.
2. Create a "Thin"
Table to Divide Your Columns
If you simply want a line
to divide your web page sections, the best way to do so is using a table.
Simply create a table between
your sections (you may have three columns with the middle column becoming
the divider line.)
You can make the column as
small as "1 pixel or percent of table" wide, or larger if needed.
Also, you can select different
colors for this table to match your web page colors.
This is an easy way to create
a divider line, and will not hinder visitors and page loading time.
Follow the link below to
view a sample web page using a table as the vertical divider line...
http://www.webmastercourse.com/web-design-weekly/vertical-line-divider.htm
This page was created using
Netscape Composer, and the steps taken were as follows:
1. Create a three-column
table that is 600 pixels in width.
2. Sizes are as follows:
Far left column size (18 % of table), middle column (1 % of table), far
right column size (81 % of table).
3. Changed the color
of the middle column to match my text links (navy blue).
4. Inserted the number
"0" into the divider column and made the number "0" the same color as the
column (navy blue). The reason I did this is because Netscape Composer
web pages will not show a
table or column of a table
unless it has text within it. Don't know why, but it's so.
I insert the number "0" so that the divider column will show, but the visitor
does not see this number because I've made it the same color as the column
- it's hidden.
Take these four steps in
Netscape Composer to create a vertical divider line that's neat and easily
viewed by your visitors.
You can get very creative
with tables!
